What Matters Most

Life is lived in the hard times as well as the good. Why is it that we want to avoid the hard times? It’s what matters most. Those are the times we discover what we’re made of and where we place our trust.

Hey, I’m first in line when it comes to wanting to avoid the painful things in life. I have been known to try to shield my kids from the pain in life as well. What an insult that is! Who am I to prevent them, these humans that I birthed, to decide what is too painful for them to bare?

I was reading Jesus Calling this morning, as I do most mornings. I ran across a reading today that held a particular idea that I often ponder.

“Trust Me (the reading began) with every fiber of your being. What  I can accomplish in and through you is proportional to how much you depend on Me. One aspect of this is the degree to which you trust Me in a crisis or major decision. Some people fail miserably here, while others are at their best in tough times. Another aspect is even more telling: the constancy of your trust in Me. People who rely on Me in the midst of adversity may forget about Me when life is flowing smoothly. Difficult times can jolt you into awareness of your need for Me, whereas smooth sailing can lull you into the stupor of self-sufficiency”.

The reading continues:

“I care as much about your tiny trust-steps through daily life as about your dramatic leaps of faith. You may think that no one notices, but One who is always beside you sees everything and rejoices. Consistently trusting in Me is vital to flourishing in My Presence”.

And there it is. Why do we think that the tiny living out of our daily lives means so little to the One who knows all things?

In Psalms 139 it states that God’s thoughts about you and me individually are too numerous for us to count. They out-number the grains of sand. Do you realize how much He thinks of each of us? Sand makes up a great part of planet earth.

Why do I think the tiny things are of no significance? It’s the tiny things in life that make up the greater portion of the time we live.

It’s what matters most.
