West Side Story

My sons are part of Master’s Conservatory of Performing Arts. This weekend they did West Side Story. I loved it! I hated it! The performance itself was good. A lot of the students stepped it up this year. I hated the storyline.

It was fun watching the lively dances, the colorful costumes, the students bronzed skin and some with hair dyed dark. West Side Story calls for these things.

It was hard watching my son get stabbed to death. It was hard watching my other son shoot someone and get taken away by the police force. Yeah, I know, it was just drama…but an all too real storyline none-the-less. And to hear the excitement in the voices of the Jets and Sharks talking about “the rumble” like they were going to some party, it just served to remind me that this is real-life for some young people. West Side Story could be anyone’s story in the world we live in today.

I will go again and watch tonight, the last performance of West Side Story by Master’s Conservatory and I will cry once again during the closing act as Maria comes to grips with the deaths of her brother and her precious Anton.

As a homeschool family we looked for creative outlets to become involved in. This school provided all three of my kids with drama, music and dance opportunities. West Side Story was one of many musicals my kids were a part of. Although it was hard to watch my kids play the roles they were cast in, I am grateful for all the cottage schools that provide homeschool families the chance to participate in the arts
