More Than I Can Chew

Have you ever bitten off more than you could chew? I certainly had a mouth-full last week.

In a previous post, http://lifejustsaying.blogspot.com/2011/07/what-just-happened.html, I told of an opportunity I had to get eight college credits with no cost to me. Tuition- check, books-check, parking permit-check…all I had to do was show up. Show up and do the work. I was so caught up in the excitement and honor I felt by being offered this chance that I neglected to count the cost. Way too much to chew.

My family was very supportive and helpful last week, doing things I normally did, filling in for me while I studied, and they would have continued to do so for the next 4 1/2 weeks. For that I am gratful and pleased, but it just wasn’t working. The timing just wasn’t right. So I made the decision to sit this one out.

I’m glad that I went last week because if I hadn’t of I would’ve always wondered if I should have. But more importantly, if I hadn’t of sat in classes for 16 hours last week, and spent another however many hours I put in at home, I would never have discovered how much I want to continue pursuing this goal…when the time is right.

As hard as it was to reach this decision last night, and as hard as it is to accept it today, I still know it was the right decision for me…for now.

I emailed my instructors to let them know of my decision. They each sent me a message in return. One included a favorite proverb: “Be not afraid of growing slowly, be afraid only of standing still.” Yeah.

I will continue the dialog with the admissions people and work toward taking the classes I need to reach my goal. I’m good with growing slowly.
