Every Day We Need It

I came across a devotional I read earlier this year from New Morning Mercies by Paul David Tripp. Every day we need it, is what this devotional is about because this is so not a perfect life. After the year and a half we have had in our country, how can we think we’ll ever NOT need it? After all the things…we need it every day.

Holy Spirit, Jesus, we need the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, wife of an addict, wives of addicts, don't do life alone

I was struck with the truth of this statement at the top of the page on this particular day; “Every day you need it. You and I simply can’t live without it. What is it? The indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit”. For a better understanding of what the indwelling of the Holy Spirit looks like, read this article; Understanding The Indwelling Of The Holy Spirit.

I think it’s safe to say, as a follower of Jesus, that we can’t do life on our own. We need each other, now more than ever. Not just our country but our world is changing so fast it’s hard to keep up! We need the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit every single minute of every single day, especially while trying to make sense of all the changes that are taking place and are threatening the freedoms our country was founded on. Romans 8:13 states: For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if you live by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.”

We need it every day because we aren’t a society that relishes putting to death the deeds of our body. In fact, we are a people who follow after the dictates of what our human flesh desires. As a wife of an addict, you get that probably better than most. Putting to death the desires of the flesh would save a lot of heartache and pain for marriages and families.

It’s not enough for us to believe. Believing is important, but the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit is how the inside of us changes. God in us. He is our only Hope.

Being in community with other believers is not just important for the wife of an addict, but all of us. We need Jesus and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, but we need each other too. God often shows up in the form of a fellow believer at just the right time.

Don’t do life alone. You were never meant to. No matter how painful, how embarrassing or overwhelming things are, find someone who is willing to walk with you through it all. And just as important, find someone you can support through their difficult journey. It helps us gain perspective and enables us to experience a reprieve from the all-consuming situation in our own lives.

None of this is easy. Finding people you can trust to share your circumstances takes time. Inviting Jesus into your life and situation will help you navigate everything else because every day we need the presence of God in our lives.
