Broken and Beautiful

Broken and beautiful aren’t words most people typically put together. How can something be both broken and beautiful at the same time? They can co-exist. A lot of people have stories of despair before allowing God to turn being broken into something beautiful.

I did an interview on my podcast Chasing Hard with Jillian Timberlake a few months ago. She “stumbled” across a business and ministry while writing her life story for her children to read one day. Broken and beautiful was the result of her writing. It’s been exciting watching how God is using her to help people (mostly women) take broken to beautiful.

There is a Japanese art form called Kintsugi. This art is about repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise the brokenness.

being broken, trusting God, when it's hard, when it doesn't look like God is listening, God can fix the brokenness in your life, God can fix the brokenness in your marriage, He is with you, run to Jesus

That’s exactly what God does with the hearts and lives of broken people. How beautiful is that? Only a God of compassion and forgiveness can take the ugly, shameful parts of our lives and restore them into something lovely, not perfect but perhaps better because of the scars we carry. Those scars give us opportunities to share what Jesus has done in our lives. Finding purpose in brokenness goes a long way in the healing process that is imperative for us to live emotionally healthy lives.

Jillian puts on workshops allowing women to break a pottery piece of their choice and then lovingly put it back together with lacquer, turning bad into good. The symbolism of that art form points to the Creator of the Universe who restores broken to beautiful.

Brokenness looks different for us all. Life isn’t about comparing. There will always be worse situations than the ones we are experiencing. There will always be better ones too. Being broken and beautiful can happen in any relationship. There is nothing so shattered that God can’t redeem.

I don’t know what horrible situations you have gone through or are experiencing now but I don’t have to. God knows and He can redeem all things making broken and beautiful fit together to point to His goodness and grace.
