Breakfast Cocoa

Baby, it’s cold outside. Currently it is 11º. The low tonight is -10. We have about a foot of snow on the ground, coming over a period of the last two days. I decided it was time for some breakfast cocoa, however, we had it after dinner and not for breakfast.

I remember my mom making hot chocolate when I was a kid. I’m not talking about heating a cup of milk and adding a hot chocolate mix, though there isn’t a problem with that tempting hot beverage. I just decided to make it from scratch. Although I don’t have my mother’s recipe, I did find a recipe in Better Home New Cookbook, which I’ve had for about 34 years.

I must say I quite enjoyed this warm drink on this very cold evening, as did my daughter and husband. Maybe the boys will drink some when they get back from sledding. Hey, I’m just the mother of these adult kids who still reside in our home. But enough about the family. Just so you know, they dressed warmly.

Here’s the recipe!

Breakfast Cocoa

1/3 cup cocoa (regular-type, dry)

1/3 cup sugar

Dash salt 1/2 cup water

3 1/2 cups milk

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

In a saucepan, mix cocoa, sugar, and salt; add water. Bring to boiling, stirring constantly. Boil 1 minute. Stir in milk; heat to boiling point (do not boil). Add vanilla; beat with rotary beater just before serving. Float dollops of marshmallow crème atop each serving. Makes 4 cups cocoa.

I didn’t have any marshmallow crème ( no mistake in the spelling), or marshmallows. And, the mention of rotary beaters lets you know just how old this cookbook is. Nevertheless, the stuff was tasty!
