Back to the Basics in Homeschooling

I am in my 15th year of homeschooling our children. It’s been an adventure for sure! I have tons of good memories of just starting out, watching our kids eagerly wanting to learn how to read, how to write, how to… Our youngest child and only homeschool student, is a freshmen in high school this year and we have gone back to the basics in homeschooling. The simple, tried and true teachings of Charlotte Mason have taken us along our journey of education so far and I am sure, will see us through to the end.

My role is different as my children enter their high school years, but still needed nonetheless. Our son reads, reads, and reads some more. My goal of instilling their love of learning for life has its foundation in reading. If you love to read you learn for life.

I have been reminded today, and affirmed to a degree, in our decision to impart the love of learning through books. It gives my heart great joy to hear my children share bits of random facts from something they have read. Once a relationship with the book they are reading has been firmly established, the potential of what they can and will learn is unlimited.

There are many different ways to learn. Different strokes for different folks they say. I think this is true for homeschoolers. Which is why we are going back to the basics of homeschooling.
