Back to (Home) School!

Summer is officially over. Kids are going back to school, and back to home school, or are preparing to do so in the very near future.

Back to (Home) School!

Summer is over, I know this is true. I sat down to perform the annual ritual that I do every August…or September if I forget. I wrote my Letter of Intent to home school my child and printed it off so it can be mailed to the school board in my county.

Back to (Home) School!

I have been repeating this act of enlightenment for eighteen years. That is the time we began our homeschooling journey when our oldest child started school.

I wrote this particular letter with mixed emotions. This is the last year I will be informing the school board of my intent to home school my children. My youngest child, my son, is a senior this year.

How fast the time went in retrospect…isn’t that always how it goes? During those middle school years, when the novelty had worn thin, and the hard work of learning had set in, the time crept by as slowly as an inch worm crossing a fallen tree limb.

I knew this was coming, I did! In fact, I counted down the years, months and the days. And here we are, the last year is about to commence.

Don’t get me wrong, there are things I won’t miss…like writing the Letter of Intent. My cute, smart, funny and talented man-child was pretty much on autopilot anyway, and since he has been driving for six months with his restricted license, he is able to take himself to classes and extra-curricular activities. But oh, how I miss those early days.

Another chapter is beginning to close as I turn the last pages during this school year.

For now though, I will embrace this year of lasts, and hold every moment close to this homeschooling mother’s heart of mine.
