Amish Life

I am intriqued by the Amish and their lifestyle. In fact, I want to be Amish, except for the fact that I couldn’t wear make-up, or “modern” clothes, or have central air conditioning, or drive a car, or have electricity…Okay, so maybe it’s their beliefs and ideas that I am so taken with. Their sense of family and community is captivating. The way they spend their time, so very different from “Englishers”.

One year while on vacation, we visited Lancaster, Pennsylvania. It was beautiful country. The shops were quaint and the craftsmanship, superb. One of my favorite trips, it was.

I enjoy reading and do so often. I find myself reading books about the Plain Folk on a somewhat regular basis. One of my favorite authors on the subject is Beverly Lewis. I am reading a trilogy at present. The Judgement is the second book and the current one I am reading. I found a prayer in this book. It is a bedtime prayer. I like it.

Holy Father, we ask that we may spend this coming night – which you have ordained for our rest – and all the remainder of our lives under Your divine protection and shield. O holy Father, defend us and cover us with the wings of your compassion. Amen.

  1. Loved this post because I, too, am intrigued by the Amish. I’ve read many books, both fiction and non-fiction. Although I know they are diverse just like any group of people it does bring me sense of peace when I escape into that world for a while. 🙂
I’m reading “The Amish Midwife” right now. Some of my favorite authors are Shelley Shepard Gray, Cindy Woodsmall and Wanda Brunsetter.
The prayer you posted was beautiful…thanks for sharing!
