A Rose By Any Other Name

I read an interesting blog today Hi Nice to Meet You! The owner of the blog The Nester, wrote about her name. She doesn’t like her name, nor does she use her name on her blog. It starting me thinking about mine.

My name isn’t lifejustsaying. I, along with Hi Nice to Meet You!, was trying to remain anonymous, and stay safe on the Internet. (That and we don’t like our names.)

My given name is Laurie, pronounced like ah, or la. Most people don’t pronounce my name that way. They call me Lori, pronounced just like it’s spelled. When I introduce myself and pronounce my name the way my parents intended it to be, no one understands what I am saying. Seriously. If I say Lori, Botta Bing Botta Boom…done. And for the record, not that I was asked or anything, I prefer Lori.

To make matters worse, my parents grew up in the country. Back in those parts people were called by first and middle name. For most of my life, my grandparents called me…wait for it…Laurie (la) Jo.

Needless to say, I didn’t like my middle name either. Not even while watching Petticoat Junction…okay, maybe a little more then.

So there you have it, the name behind lifejustsaying.

Not a bad name, all in all, considering my dad’s name is Botts. But we’ll save that for another day.

  1. Sometimes a person’s name––especially if it’s a little different––sets them apart. Sometimes that attention is unwelcome. I feel your pain. Never cared for my name either, but hey, it could be worse.

  2. I think that most of the time, people don’t like their own name. I think it’s probably because it follows us around everywhere we go becoming such a huge part of our life, but we didn’t get to pick it. I can’t stand my name [Linda] either. Although you can’t pick your name, I don’t see why you couldn’t change the pronunciation, since you prefer it the way most people assume it is anyways.
