Today the hubs and I visited Big Bone Lick State Park. Here are 5 things I learned.
1. Yellow flowers make a muddy creek look inviting.
2. The word “Extinct” originated in Kentucky, hey, I’m just repeating what I heard. It seems that the bison were being killed off back in the day, in an attempt to drive Native Americans from the land. This caused bison to become extinct. What? Who knew?
3. A two year old bison bull…weighing in at 1600 pounds, half the weight he will be as a full grown bison.
4. These guys were said to have roamed the Bluegrass (not these exact figures). Again…who knew?
5. Vertebrate Paleontology originated in Kentucky due to the creatures that roamed here.
6. I still don’t know what Vertebrate Paleontology is.
That last one was a bonus!
The main reason for our trip. My husband is putting in some cold crops in our little raised bed garden. We stopped here Sunday (click to read Day Tripping in Kentucky) and found the plants he wanted. Not sure why we didn’t purchase them then, maybe so we would have an excuse to return to the general area and finish up our trip. Interstate Greenhouse & Nursery is a big operation. The folks who were working there were helpful and informative.
